THE GREAT LAKE TRAIL
The Great Lake Trail will take you into a truly ancient area that is interwoven with Maori history and stories from a time past. You can feel the history surrounding you as you ride into the forest and the landscape unfolds to reveal stunning views across the water to the majestic volcanic mountains of the Tongariro National Park. Dramatic scenery combines with serene lake views, powerful waterfalls, native bird song and incredible trail quality to deliver an unforgettable experience.
The Great Lake Trail is proud to be part of Nga Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail network.

TRAIL HEAD LOCATION
Waihaha Bridge to Wakaipo Bay is a two-to-three day grade 3 trail but can be done in one day if you wish with a minimum of 8 hours riding time plus a half an hour boat trip to connect the two halves. There are shuttles available from Taupo or Kinloch.
Both the W2K and K2K are grade 3 and can be started from Kinloch, if you wish to complete each leg one way then you will need to arrange pick up once you get to the end of the trail, there are a few shuttle operators in the area.
There are information boards and maps available at trail section heads and on the Kinloch Domain. The Kinloch Domain also has a shelter, bike wash facility and plenty of car parks. Here's an overview map of the Great Lake Trail.
